A day after both Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Suishil Modi have strongly defended from seeking her resignation, Bihar’s Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma today submitted her resignation from the cabinet. She was forced to resign facing criticism for her husband’s alleged link in the Muzaffarpur shelter home abuse case, Her husband is accused of having links with alleged mastermind in the case Brajesh Thakur.
The opposition targeting her since two days amid reports that the call data record of main accused Brajesh Thakur has thrown names of many high-profile men including Manju Verma’s husband Chadeshwar Verma.
Earlier in the day, she met the chief minister and has reportedly handed over her resignation to him. Nitish Kumar had earlier strongly rubbished allegations against her “If someone related to the Minister is involved, they won’t be spared. But why is this issue being raised only now. We had called her (Manju) and she denied any involvement. How is it justified to level baseless allegations?” Kumar had said.
The Supreme Court has also pulled up the Bihar government over the case, saying the state had financed it in a way by giving public funds to the accused shelter homes. According to sources, the CBI team is also likely to interrogate Thakur and SWD officials about how Thakur got licence for his NGOs and on what basis was he allocated the funds.
