After dramatic developments, finally the line was clear to rest DMK stalwart and five-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M Karunanidhi, at Marina beach along with other Dravadian stalwarts.
Earlier emotions of DMK cadre were caught up high when the state government denied permission, showing some legal complications, suggesting alternate place. A controversy erupted on Tuesday after the Tamil Nadu government turned down DMK’s request to allot space for Karunanidhi’s burial near party founder CN Annadurai’s memorial at the iconic Marina Beach.
But, DMK leadership was firm and approached the High Court for urgent intervention. Madras HC has given the green signal for burial of Karunanidhi at the Marina beach behind his mentor Anna at the Anna memorial.
After the DMK and TN government counsels presented their arguments in the Madras High Court, the two- judge HC bench hearing the case gave the go-ahead allowing the burial of the DMK chief at the beach. The Marina beach already houses the memorials of Karunanidhi’s mentor Anna and his contemporaries MGR and Jayalalithaa.
After Hospital authorities revealing worsening health condition of Karunanidhi, many family members led by L K Stalin personelly met Chief Minister at his residence and requested him to provide place at Marina. But he didn’t respond positively.
The DMK legal team left no stone unturned to ensure that their leader’s final resting place will be among his Dravidian movement counterparts of Anna, MGR and Jayalalitha. The state government was asked to present presented its counter affidavit in the Madras HC which it did at 8 AM.
