Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid homage to the late DMK President M Karunanidhi after laying a wreath on the body that was lying in state at Rajaji Hall in Chennai. Arriving Chennai by a special flight, Modi reached the government estate and paid his respects to the late former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
After going around the casket in which the body was wrapped in the tri-color, the Prime Minister patted M.K. Stalin, Karunanidhi’s son and political heir, and his daughter Kanimozhi, MP, and comforted them with words of solace. After exchanging a few words with them, Modi also comforted other family members and left the place.
In a break from tradition, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day as a mark of respect to DMK chief M Karunanidhi who died last evening. Glowing tributes were paid to the departed leader in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, before the Houses were adjourned for the day.
There is no precedent of adjourning the House in case the departed leader is not a sitting or former member of the House. It is a Parliament convention to adjourn the day for deceased sitting members.
Meanwhile, the Government of India announces with profound sorrow the death of Dr. M. Karunanidhi, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at Kauvery Hospital, Chennai. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the National Flag will fly half-mast on Wednesday in Delhi and Capitals of all States/UTs and throughout the State of Tamil Nadu.
It has also been decided to accord State funeral to the departed leader. The Government of India will observe one-day State mourning throughout India on Wednesday and there will be no official entertainment on the Day.
