In a surprising move, the Government of Andhra Pradesh, headed by `secular’ Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is organizing a Christian Religious Event named ‘Children’s Programme on Teachings of Jesus Christ (in Telugu)’ at Andhra Pradesh Bhavan in the national capital New Delhi, on August 11. The government is organizing this programme in association with a Christian Religious Organization named ‘Shalom Christian Assembly’ whose further details like registration, date of establishment, founder and society members etc. are unknown and are also not available online.
Expressing strong apprehensions with the government organizing such a programme, Ayyalasomayajula Santosh, President, Legal Rights Protection Forum, said it is against to the law. He also fears that this program is being organized targeting innocent children of different religions belongs to Telugu States.
Organizing such religious propagation events targeting innocent children is not only unacceptable but also against their “Right of Opinion to think and believe what they want, and to practise their religion” as prescribed by United Nations Convention on Child Rights in its Article No. 14, he added.
In a complaint to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), he further said that the Article also prescribes that “Parents should guide their children on these matters” – But here in this case, the organizers are not taking any consent from the parents and moreover they are creating a confusion that as if it is just an entertainment program that includes Singing, Puppet Show, Skit, Moral Story which follows Bible Lesson.
