Ruckus over Rafale deal in Rajya Sabha

The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till 2.30 pm following an uproar after the Congress demanded a discussion on the Rafale deal and setting up of a Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe it.

The Rajya Sabha is expected to discuss the triple talaq bill or The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 today, which is the last day of the Parliament’s monsoon session. The amendments are to make the offence bailable and give more say to the victim before the release of her husband.

However, te Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice within minutes during the pre-lunch session amid protest by Congress members over their demand for a JPC probe into the alleged scam in the Rafale jet deal. The Deputy Chairman then adjourned the House a few minutes before the Zero hour was to end. When the House met for the Question Hour at noon, Congress members again raised their demand. Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu then adjourned the House till noon.

Meanwhile, UPA chairperson  Sonia Gandhi led her party MPs in a protest against the Narendra Modi government over an alleged scam in the Rafale deal. Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Defence minister AK Antony, Congress MP Ambika Soni as well as other senior party MPs gathered at the Gandhi statue holding placards that read ‘Rafale cover-up out in the open’, ‘Modi corruption exposed’, ‘Rafale scam exposed’ and demanding that it be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee. Members of other Opposition parties also joined the protest.
