Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik was today appointed as the new governor of Jammu and Kashmir. According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman the appointment was approved by President Ram Nath Kovind. Lal ji Tandon will replace Malik as the Bihar Governor. He will be the first career politician to be appointed to the position in the last 51 years, indicating a change in the strategy of the Centre which has so far relied on ex-babus to run show in the troubled state.
The 72-year-old Malik has been associated with almost all political hues, starting as a socialist student leader to the vice president of the BJP, before being appointed as the Bihar governor last year.
The President appointed Satyadev Narayan Arya as the Governor of Haryana and Baby Rani Maurya as the Governor of Uttarakhand. Ganga Prasad, the Governor of Meghalaya, has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Sikkim.
Tathagata Roy, the Governor of Tripura, who was repetedly giving controversial statements was shunted out to Meghalaya, while Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki has been appointed as Governor of Tripura. The appointments will take effect from the dates the incumbents assume charge of their respective offices, said the communique released by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
