Four cops shot dead in J&K’s Shopian

Militants today shot dead four policemen in Shopian district of south Kashmir hours following the security forces killed a Altaf Ahmad Dar, a top commander of the Hizbul Mujahedeen, and his associate in bordering Anantnag.

Terrorists fired indiscriminately when they were escorting a deputy superintendent of police when militants fired them from an orchard near a fruit market in Bongam. The militants took away the rifles of three dead policemen.

The cops injured in the firing were rushed to nearby hospital, however, they succumbed to their injuries. The martyred policemen are identified as Constable Ishfaq Ahmad Mir, Constable Javaid Ahmad Bhat, Constable Mohammad Iqbal Mir and SPO Adil Manzoor Bhat.

Taking to twitter, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said that she was deeply pained at the deaths. “Pained to hear that four policeman have been killed in an IED explosion in Sopore. My deepest condolences to their families,” Mufti tweeted.

A search-and-cordon operation was launched in the area and senior army and police officials are on the spot. This is one of the deadliest attack on the police in south Kashmir in recent months. So far more than 30 policemen have been killed by militants in different parts of Valley this year.
