14 babies’ skeletons found at empty plot in Kolkata

In a shocking development, decomposed remains of 14 babies and foetuses were found wrapped in plastic near south Kolkata this afternoon. The remains were found in Haridebpur area in Kolkata’s southern outskirts when workers were cleaning a plot of land a real estate company had recently purchased.

City Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, who visited the spot along with Commissioner of Police Rajeev Kumar and other officers, said, the foetuses were soaked with chemicals and hence, even after getting decomposed, it did not emit any bad odour or stench. Till now, 14 of them have been recovered.

We are cleaning up the bushes to ensure no more foetuses have been dumped in the area. Police doubt the possibility of an illegal abortion racket. All the nearby nursing homes, private hospital and clinic are now under the scanner, he added.

The police are suspecting that some abortion racket operating nearby could be behind it. Though there is no specific clue, they said going by circumstantial evidences, it seems that they were dumped there as the land was lying abandoned.
