Not newborns, but medical waste


Panic created after Kolkata police announcing the recovery of fourteen foetuses wrapped in plastic sheets from the bushes of an empty plot in Haridebpur in South Kolkata, was later found not truthful following doctors did not find any human tissue but medical waste in the sheets.

Praveen Tripathi, Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police, later clarified that doctors have opined that no human tissue was found in the plastic sheets recovered from Haridebpur. The contents are being examined.

The plastic sheets were sent to M R Bangur hospital for examination. However, after they opened the sheets, no medical waste but dry ice was found inside. The polivr said that some dry ice has been recovered and examination is on for exact nature of the material.

Earlier in the day, both Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Sovan Chatterjee and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Behala) Nilanjan Biswas had said that 14 foetuses were recovered from the empty plot in Haridebpur. Chatterjee, along with Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar had also visited the spot in the afternoon.

Earlier today, workers on a cleaning drive conducted by Kolkata Municipal Corporation had come across a plastic bag believed to have been containing remains of one of the newborns. A thorough search conducted by the police revealed more plastic bags.
