Hectic speculations have started doing the rounds that Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is set to join BJP, ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and he may contest for Lok Sabha from Thiruvananthapuram, presently represented by Congress leader and former union minister Shashi Thapoor.
The actor’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the day of Janmashtami, has given scope for these specualtions. Sources said that RSS is keen to induct him into BJP and make him to contest from the state capital. Incidentally, this is the lone Lok Sabha seat from Kerala, where BJP has been doing well, though failing to win.
Though BJP and RSS are having extensive cadre from downtrodden sections of the society and spread to all nook and corners of the state, they have been failing to make a dent in electoral politics. This was mainly due to absence of prominent political faces. Joining of Mohanlal may add star value, besides makes BJP more visable in the state.
Already Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi is in BJP, hower it didn’t have any prominent political faces in the state. Gopi, who campaigned for BJP in the Kerala Assembly elections and has been embroiled in a tax evasion case, is presently an MP in the Rajya Sabha.
Two years ago, in 2016, Mohanlal’s support for Modi’s demonetisation move was also led to heavy specualtions at that time that he is preferring BJP as his political destination.
After his meeting with Modi on Monday, Mohanlal said the Prime Minister had assured all possible assistance for Kerala, which is picking up the pieces from the devastating floods that killed nearly 300 people and displaced thousands of others. The national award-winning actor said the PM expressed his desire to participate in the Global Malayalee roundtable to chalk out the roadmap for a “New Kerala”.
“Modi has assured all support and offered to participate in the Global Malayalee Roundtable that can formulate futuristic solutions for a New Kerala. Hon. PMO India has also appreciated our vision to set up a Cancer Care Centre to cater to the needs of the underprivileged,” Mohanlal tweeted.
In a Facebook post, Mohanlal said he had also briefed the PM about his VishwaSanthi foundation’s social initiatives. The foundation works towards the upliftment of health and education among the underprivileged sections of the society.
