Court refuses to remand journalist Nakkeeran Gopal

In a major embarrassment for Tamil Nadu Governor and Chennai police, the Magistrate has refused to remand journalist Nakkeeran Gopal to judicial custody.

Nakkeeran, the Chief Editor of Tamil magazine was arrested after a complaint was filed against him by Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s office over publication’s reportage on Nirmala Devi case.

Nakkeeran Gopal was detained around 8.15 am from the Chennai airport today, when he was traveling for Pune, to attend for a function. When the police produced him before a magistrate, seeking remand foisting sedation charges, the court wondered on the way it was made.

Manwhile, MDMK chief Vaiko, who reached outside the Chintadripet police station, where Gopal was detained, said, “This arrest shows the threatening attitude of the authorities towards independent journalists. Is there Governor’s rule in the state? I blame the state government.”

Reportedly, the magazine run by Gopal featured pictures of Purohit and Nirmala Devi, an accused in the Madurai Kamaraj University sex scandal.
