The stage seems to be set for the suspension of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Director Rakesh Asthana, following his name was figured in a bribe case, on which the CBI had registered FRI. This decision was reportedly taken after CBI chief Alok Verma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, last evening and discussed about the case.
Disturbing with internal struggle in CBI between director and additional director, Modi said to be had summoned both the officers last evening. According to reports, a letter was sent over weekend, in which Alok Verma has called for Rakesh Asthana’s suspension, referring him “a source of demoralization”. He has sent proposals to the Home Ministsery.
Rakesh Asthana, a Gujarat officer was elevated as one of the country’s top investigators last year. Sources in the PM’s office say the CBI has not sought permission to act against him, as is required in such cases.
Meanwhile, the CBI has arrested its officer Devender Kumar, CBI Deputy Superintendent of Police, who has worked with Rakesh Asthana. Kumar was accused of making false statements against its chief. Devender Kumar, today has approached the Delhi High Court.
