Attack on leader of opposition and YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, this afternoon at Visakhapatnam airport, by a man with a sharp-edged object, has led to political storm in the state. The attack puts in sharp focus as to how the attacker could carry a sharp-edged weapon inside the high-security area of an international airport.
The incident took place when Reddy was traveling from Visakhapatnam to Hyderabad. The attacker has been identified as Janapally Srinvas Rao, who is working as a server in airport canteen and came close to the leader under the guise of serving team.
At around 12 noon, Reddy entered in the VIP lounge of Visakhapatnam airport. Around 12.30 Rao, who is working at airport’s Fusion canteen came near Jagan requesting for a selfie. While taking selfie, Rao took out the blade and attacked Reddy catching all unawares. Jagan suffered a cut on his left hand. Immediately after first aid, Jagan boarded the flight and reached Hyderabad.
AP DGP R P Thakur confirmed that the attacker was a harden fan of Reddy and no motivation was seen, besides seeking some cheap attention. As the airport comes under surveillance of CISF, he said they are investigating the case. They seized a 10-page letter from his pocket, which was handed over the police. “We are investigating the issue from all angles and we are taking it quite seriously. If need be we will increase security for Mr.Jagan Mohan Reddy,” said RP Thakur.
The YSR Congress leaders have blamed the ruling TDP government for the attack. On the other hand, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu strongly condemned the attack and warned that the police will not spare any one who want to disturb peace in the state.
Janapalli Subbaraju, elder brother of Srinivas Rao, the attacker, said the family is unable to believe that he attacked Jagan. “He is a great fan of Jagan, our family supports him and we are all his fans. That is why we are so shocked to hear that my brother attacked Jagan,” Subbaraju said.
