Two policemen and a cameraperson from national broadcaster Doordarshan were killed today in a Maoist attack in poll-bound Chhattisgarh. Two security officers were also injured in the attack that took place in Dantewada district’s Aranpur village. The police were patrolling in the area when the attack took place.
The Doordarshan team was in Dantewada for election coverage and was moving in vehicles. Two other DD News staffers, including a journalist from Delhi, are reported to be safe. Hours before the attack, dressed in a salmon pink shirt, Achyuta Nanda Sahu smiled for a selfie with the locals. ‘At Dantewada Chhatishgarh Election Yatra,’ he captioned the photographs on his Facebook wall. Hours later, Sahu was dead.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh condemned the attack on police forces and DD cameraperson, calling it an “attack on democracy.” “The society should strongly condemn the acts of violence and should come together in such times.” He also called the attack a “shameful” act of Naxals.
I&B Minister of State, Rajyavardhan Rathore also condemned the attack. “These insurgents will not weaken our resolve. We will prevail,” he wrote on Twitter
