Causing a major embarrassment to BJP in Karnataka, its candidate L. Chandrashekar, from Ramanagara assembly by-election, today, two days ahead of polling quit the party and returned to the Congress.
Chandrashekar, who was in Congress before, had joined the BJP only on October 10 and immediately he was fielded as party’s candidate, against Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s wife Anitha Kumaraswamy.
Announcing his decision, Chandrashekar alleged that he was ignored by the BJP leaders, who didn’t turn up at the campaigning for the Karnataka by-election as promised. “BJP leaders had promised their support to me when I decided to contest on the party ticket from Ramanagara. However, none of them even came forward to campaign for me. So, I made the decision to quit the party…,” he said.
“They told me that my victory would mark the downfall of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government. But all the leaders were camped elsewhere and did not show any intention to campaign for me,” he said, adding that he would support the coalition candidate Anitha Kumaraswamy in the Karnataka by-election 2018.
The main opponent announced his decision to quit from the contest, though technically it may not be possible now to remove his name from the ballot papers, it ensure the victory of Anitha Kumaraswamy. As Chief Minister had won from two constituencies, this by-poll was necessiated due to his resignaiton from here.
