SC upset over leak of CBI’s Alok Verma’s reply

The Supreme Court of India today seems to be upset over the leak of CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma’s confidential reply filed with its secretary general in the media. The apex court was hearing Verma’s plea against govt’s decision to divest him of duties, sending him on leave.

Taking a serious objection about the sealed cover response of Alok Verma getting leaked to a news portal, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi said, “We don’t think anyone of you deserves a hearing.” The apex court has adjourned to November 29 hearing on Verma’s plea.

Adjourning the case, the CJI also handed over a copy of the news report to Verma’s lawyer, Fali S Nariman. “We are giving you this copy as a senior and respected member of the bar and not as Verma’s lawyer,” Chief Justice Gogoi said.

The court has asked senior advocate Fali Nariman appearing for Verma to explain how this happened. However, Nariman expresses shock over the leak of CBI director’s response. Nariman also said that the press must act with responsibility.

He revealed another shocking detail that the request for additional time to file response to Verma was without his consent. He said the response was ready as the entire night he had worked to complete it. He was astonished to read in today’s papers that time was sought by Verma.
