At least 25 people were killed after the bus they were travelling fell into a canal in South Karnataka. The accident took place around noon, after the vehicle plunged into VC canal of the Cauvery river in Kanaganamaradi village in Mandya, nearly 105 km from Bengaluru. The bus was submerged in water and locals were trying to pull the bus out from the water body.
“25 people have died. I believe the driver was not driving properly, said Deputy Karnataka CM G Parameshwara. He also said that he he will find out what exactly happened and take some more inputs. Rescue teams have reached the spot and rescue operation was underway.
Locals said the bus, which was on its way to Mandya from Pandavapura, was completely submerged under water. Most of the victims are school children, they said, adding that they were returning home after half-a-day at school.
Police officers and the personnel from the fire and emergency services have rushed to the spot. Reports said that Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy is likely to visit the accident spot soon.
