Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy today announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the 25 people who lost their lives when a bus plunged into a river canal in Mandya district. “An ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh would be paid to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the tragic accident,” a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office said.
Kumaraswamy and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the accident site and expressed their condolences to the families of the victims. Rescue operations were still underway to search for the remaining victims.
Cancelling all his official engagements, Kumaraswamy visited the site of the accident and expressed shock over the incident. “This was an extremely tragic incident. I pray for peace to the souls of the deceased and strength to their families to bear the loss,” he added.
Rescue teams have reached the spot and rescue operation were on in full swing, officials said. Immediately after knwoing about the incident, earlier in the day, Kumaraswamy has spoken to district in-charge minister C S Puttaraju and district Deputy Commissioner and directed them to visit the spot immediately and oversee the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, RTO officials said the vehicle had valid documents and that negligence of the driver may have caused the tragedy. The bus was transferred from Mangaluru RTO division to Mandya RTO division after receiving a clearance certificate on April 1, 2015.
