Three terrorists were shot dead by security forces in an overnight encounter that broke out on the outskirts of Srinagar, last evening. A soldier was injured in the operation that lasted over 17 hours. Meanwhile, a wanted Hizbul Mujahideen militant, who was luring youths into militancy, was arrested today, in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajinder Gupta senior police officer, Reyaz Ahmad, a resident of Sounder Dachhan village and a close associate of hardcore terrorist Mohammad Amin alias ‘Jehangir’, was arrested by a police party based on specific information from the town.
He said several pictures of Ahmad holding an AK assault rifle had gone viral on social media in the recent past and his name also surfaced during interrogation of two of his associates who were arrested in the town on July 1.
Earlier, the security forces launched a search operation on Saturday evening after receiving specific information about the presence of terrorists at a house at Mujgund village, around 11 kms from Srinagar. During the operation, security forces blew up five residential houses while trying to neutralise the terrorists, who kept moving from house to house to evade the security forces.
A police spokesman said arms, ammunition and other incriminating material was recovered from the encounter site. Clashes between security forces and protesters erupted soon after the encounter. The police have appealed people not to venture into the encounter site until the area has been sanitised from explosive material.
