Sonia Gandhi unveils Karunanidhi statue at DMK headquarters

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi today unveiled the a life-size bronze statue of late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi at the DMK headquarters in Chennai in the presence of senior opposition leaders, demonstrating opposition is rallying around DMK in Tamil Nadu politics. The eight-foot statue has been installed besides the statue of DMK founder C N Annadurai.

Apart from Karunanidhi’s son and DMK chief MK Stalin and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, Puduchery chief minister V Narayanasamy, Tamil superstar-cum-politician Rajinikanth and former Union minister Shatrughan Sinha were also present at the ceremony at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK office.

It was the first time senior opposition figures were together at an event after the Congress wrested power in crucial Hindi states from BJP. First time Rajanikanth is seen in the company of opposition stalwarts in the state, after he initiated preparation for his own political party.After unveiling the statues, the Gandhis paid tribute to Karunanidhi at his memorial at Marina Beach.

This was the second grand meeting of the Opposition parties after the one held in New Delhi on December 10 — a day before the state assembly election results for Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram were to be announced.
