Ajay Maken resigns as Delhi Congress chief

Ahead of Lok Sabha elections, senior Congress leader and former union minister Ajay Maken has resigned as President of the Delhi Congress Committee. In a tweet, he has thanked Congress workers and party president Rahul Gandhi for their support to him.

Stating that after the 2015 Vidan Sabha elections he received a lot of love from Delhi Congress workers, the media covering the party and from our party head Rahul Gandhi ji, Maken said, ” In these difficult times, it was not easy. I thank you all for everything.”

Party sources said Maken met Congress president Rahul Gandhi, last evening, to hand over his resignation, which was accepted. He had earlier voiced his wish to resign from his position because of deteriorating health but his resignation was not accepted by the party high command then. According to reports, the leader has cited ill health as the reason behind his sudden decision. He has been a two-times MP and three times MLA and has served in the Manmohan Singh’s cabinet.

Maken took over as Delhi Congress chief four years back. He earlier had resigned in 2017 after poor performance of Congress in Delhi civic polls. However, then Congress vice President Rahul Gandhi convinced him to stay in his post.

Congress sources are indicating that most likely former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit will take over the position and work towards strengthening the party’s prospects in the national capital for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the assembly elections of 2020.
