Karnataka BJP is targeting former prime minister HD Deve Gowda to defeat him in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. It may be recalled that he has bee electing to Lok Sabha from Hassan with out much difficult.
As he is said to the main piller for the present JD(S)-Congress coalition government in the state, that halted BJP from remaining in the government, though emerged as the largest party in the state Assembly, only six seats away from absolute majority.
BJP leaders are of the view now, by defeating Deve Gowda, it would be easy for them to demoralize the present coalition government in the state. Though Hassan is considered to be a safe seat for him, he has already announced that his grand-son Prajwal Revanne will contest from here next time.
Though Deve Gowda is stating that he is yet to decide on contesting in the elections, due to his advanced age, his party circles are indicating that this time he will contest form Bengaluru North seat. With the support from Congress, he felt that it would be a calk walk for him to win from here.
Presently, union minister and former BJP chief minister D V Sadananda Gouda is representing this seat. Knowing that Deve Gowda will be contesting from here, he has already decided to contest from some other contest.
According to BJP sources, the party leadership has decided to field former MP Tejaswini Ramesh as its candidate against Deve Gowda. She had created history 15-years ago as an young journalist by defeating Deve Gowda from Kanakapura constituency by over one lakh votes, as Congress candidate.
Now she is BJP MLC and her contest is likely to evoke much interest among voters. Before taking on Deve Gowda in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Tejaswini was a famous reporter and anchor at Udaya TV, a Kannada infotainment channel. The then chief minister, SM Krishna, and his man Friday D K Shivakumar, had fielded her against the formidable former Prime Minister in Kanakapura
Alleging sleaze and favouritism, Tejaswini had quit the Congress to join the BJP in 2014. She had famously said that only women who satisfy their male colleagues can grow in the Congress party. She had also actively campaigned for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections of last year.
A firebrand public speaker, a law graduate and a PhD from Bangalore University, Tejaswini has been openly taking on the Gowda clan for a long time.
