The Election Commission of India (ECI) is getting ready to conduct Lok Sabha polls during April and May. According to sources, it is likely to announce the poll schedule in the first week of March. The term of present Lok Sabha ends on June 3.
Apart form Lok Sabha polls, ECI has to conduct assembly elections to five states.The states are Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. However, it is not clear whether polls to Jammu and Kashmir assembly also will conducted along with Lok Sabha polls. Presently the state is under President’s rule and the assembly was dissolved.
Already EC officials are discussing with police and other security forces to assertain the availability of forces,so that to decide on number of phases in each state. The charting of the phases would also depend on the availability of security forces and other requirements.
Notably, in 2014, the EC had announced the election schedule on March 5 and the nine-phase electoral exercise was spread across April and May. While the first phase polling was on April 7, the last phase was on May 12.
Earlier in the day, the Election Commission (EC) had ordered its Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Delhi to request the police to take strict action against those involved in circulating fake news regarding upcoming Lok Sabha Election dates on social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.
