Piyush Goyal to present budget as finance minister Arun Jaitley faces surgery

The Union Minister for Railways and Coal, Shri Piyush Goyal announcing the extension of 22 pairs of train services running on the Indian Railways’ system, in New Delhi on January 23, 2019.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is set to present the vote-on-account budget on February 1, in the Parliament, the last budget of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s present term.

As Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is on medical treatment in USA and he is not expected to return back by Parliament session, the government has given temporary charge of Finance Ministry once again to Piyush Goyal.

A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said last evening that Goyal has temporarily been given charge of the finance ministry in view of Arun Jaitley’s indisposition.

The statement said the President, acting on advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had directed that during the period of indisposition of Arun Jaitley, the portfolios of Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs held by him, be temporarily assigned to Piyush Goyal,  in addition to the railways ministry.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan also said Jaitley has been designated as minister without portfolio during the period of his indisposition or till such time he is able to resume his work as Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs.

This is the second time that Piyush Goyal will be the interim finance minister. The first time was in May, last year, when Arun Jaitley underwent a kidney transplant. He resumed charge as finance minister several months later, in August.
