The resignation of Congress MLA from Unjha, Dr Asha Patel from the assembly and also the party, is leading to severe political crisis for the party in the state. This has exposed strong discontent prevailed among Congress MLAs in the state. She has also submitted her resignation to the Speaker of the assembly.
Reports are indicating three more Congress MLAs are also likely to follow her and to resign. All these MLAs are set to join BJP, which gives a boost to the morale of the ruling party ahead of Lok Sabha polls, in the native state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Incidentally, Dr Patel was a supporter of PAAS leader Hardik Patel. She would raise questions over issues such as women education and empowerment and point fingers at the Gujarat government during the assembly sessions.
The buzz gained momentum after reports of some Congress MLAs met Chief Minister Vijay Rupani at his bungalow in Gandhinagar this week. The MLAs included Alpesh Thakor, an MLA from Radhanpur and Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena leader.
Adding a few more name to the bandwagon are MLA from Bayad Dhavalsinh Zala, from Bechraji Bharatji Thakor, from Patan Kirit Patel, from Chotila Rujvij Makwana, from Savarkundla Pratap Dudhat and Jamjodhpur MLA Chirag Kalariya also is high.
Though few of these MLAs are denying speculations about their joining hands with BJP, Pradesh Congress president Amit Chavda expressed fear and alleged that BJP is trying to defect their MLAs by luring or intimidating them. He charged that they are trying to conceal their failure by defection.
With regarding to resignation of Asha Patel, he said that the conspiracy was hatched overnight. She was present at the party meeting at Ahmedabad on Friday till late evening and she did not express her dismay or any complaint, he added.
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said that Asha Patel opened the cards of Congress that nothing was going well in that party as she expressed her resentment with supreme leadership in a party of Rahul Gandhi too.
