It seems West Bengal is moving towards constitutional breakdown as the Kolkata police detained CBI team when they attempted to meet City Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to question him in Rose Valley and Sarada chits scams. The CBI team went there after the commissioner didn’t responded several of their summons for questioning.
First, the team approached cooperation from near-by police station, seeking their support to question Police Commissioner. After the polise refused, they proceeded to Commissioner’s residence, where they were detained by the police.
Chief Minister Mamata Banarjee also reached Police Commissioner’s residence. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended her support to the police Commissioner and accused the BJP of pursuing political vendetta.
“The highest levels of the BJP leadership are doing the worst kind of political vendetta. Not only are political parties their targets, they are misusing power to take control of the police and destroy all institutions. We condemn this,” she tweeted.
The CBI has been trying to locate Kumar to question him in connection with Rose Valley and Saradha ponzi scam cases and might arrest him as the last resort, the officials said.
The IPS officer, who led a Special Investigation Team of West Bengal Police probing the scams, needs to be questioned regarding missing documents and files but he has not responded to notices to appear before the agency, they said.
