The BJP government in north eastern state Tripura locked in a big controversy with the viral spread of an video showing its women minister was touched by another party’s minister inappropriately, at a public event, that too in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The video shows that when Prime Minister was on a stage, last Friday, launching some project, Manoj Kanti Deb of the BJP can be seen inappropriately touching the state’s social welfare and social education minister Santana Chakma in an “indecent manner”. Both the ministers were on the opposite direciton of Modi.
Opposition Left Front has demanded that Deb be sacked and charged with sexual harassment. Left Front convenor Bijan Dhar demanded that Deb must be sacked and be arrested for touching the woman minister in an extremely indecent manner on the stage from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and others addressed the public gathering.
He deplored that it appeared publicly on various social media that Deb put his hand on the waist of Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Santana Chakma, a young tribal leader and lone women minister in the cabinet.
Dhar said many young and middle-aged women had been raped or murdered since the BJP-led government came to power in Tripura 11 months ago, but this incident on a public platform was “extremely reprehensible and needs punishment”. CPI-M’s women wing AIDWA today organised a protest against Minister Kanti Deb.
Meanwhile, the BJP claimed that the Opposition was indulging in “character assassination”. BJP spokesman Nabendu Bhattacharjee said the Left Front, after raking up non-issues against the BJP government, has “started character assassination of BJP ministers on false and non-issue matters”.
