Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami today urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confer Param Vir Chakra – the highest military honour – on Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who shot down a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) F-16 during an aerial combat after it violated Indian airspace in Nowshera sector of Jammu and Kashmir last week.
In a letter to Prime Minister, he said that Abhinandan has displayed amazing poise and confidence in the face of adverse conditions, which has won him many hearts across the country. It is appropriate that he be awarded India’s highest military honour Param Vir Chakra for displaying most inimitable gallantry and valour, he added.
Wing Commander Varthaman was held captive by Pakistani authorities on February 27 after his MiG 21 Bison went down during a dogfight with Pakistani jets. He was also manhandled by a crowd after he landed in a village in PoK.
