Under-construction building collapses in Dharwad, 100 people feared trapped

More than 100 people are feared-trapped under the debris after an under-construction building collapsed in Dharward, Karnataka. A multistory building collapsed in the afternoon. Large number people are suspected to be trapped under the debris, but the numbers are yet to be confirmed. Officials confirmed that at least one person was killed and over 80 are feared trapped.

District Collector Deepa Chelan, Police Commissioner M  N Nagaraj and oher senior officials rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, some of these trapped under the debries have been rescued and rushed to the nearby hospital. Search and rescue operation underway.

According to reports, the building belongs to relative of former Congress Minister Vinay Kulkarni, who is now seeking Congress Lok Sabha seat. The construction is said to be carried out with out relevant approvals.

In a tweet, Chief Ministesr HD Kumaraswamy said that he was shocked to learn about the collapse of an under-construction building in Dharwad. I have instructed the Chief Secretary to supervise rescue operations. I have also directed the CS to send additional resources and expert rescuers by a special flight to Dharwad”. He also said that the rescue operation is on and five people have been extricated, so far, from the debris.

Residents alleged that quality of construction was low since beginning. Many questions are raised over building permission and inspection for the building. Even MLA Amrut Desai suspected the same and said he will look into the matter seriously. As of now over 60 shops, including pharmacy, provision, cloth, hotels were said to be functioning in first and second floors in the building

According to eye witnesses, building collapsed suddenly when as many as 150 people were inside shops of first and second floors. Personnel of fire and emergency services, police and other departments have rushed to the spot
