BJP’s group rivalries make dramatic changes in Benguluru South!

The surprise selection of 28-year-old young professional Tejasvi Surya, who is more familiar with social media, than people, as its candidate for safest Bengaluru South Lok Sabha constituency, at a last minute, is said to be due to deep rooted internal group rivalries prevailed in Karnataka BJP, more than party’s interest to encourage young and talented face.

Incidentally, the selection was kept abeyance till last minute spreading speculation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may contest from here and announced at the last minute, without giving any scope for alternations. The candidate is hardly known geographical boundaries of the constituency. The major qualification he is having is nephew of sitting BJP MLA Ravi Subramanya from Basavanagudi, who is a close associate of BJP’s All India Joint Organising Secretary B L Santosh.

Santosh is a RSS pracharak, deputy to BJP’s work from Karnataka. When he was in Karnataka, he had strong rivalry with state BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa. Since, his deputation to BJP, the major task he is holding in the state is to dilute Yeddyurappa’s hold over the party. However, he is only mass leader, popular with people, the BJP unable to leave the former chief minister, though his age has already crossed 75 years.

It was Yeddyurappa, who proposed name of former union minister Anant Kumar’s wife Tejaswini, after his death last year. She is a popular social activist in the city and closely monitoring developmental activities in the constituency on behalf of her husband since a long time. As the six-time MP Ananta Kumar was BJP’s national general secretary and later union minister, he used to perform several key assignments at national level.

Anant Kumar was representing the seat since 1991, without any gap. On one side, the BJP is extending support to widow of rebel actor Ambarish, Sumalatha in Mandya, after Congress denied her seat due to coalition with JDS, but here in Benguluru South it has denied seat to widow of one of its veteran leader in the state, who was responsible for the growth of the party, along with Yeddyurappa.
