Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra after taking charge as incharge for Uttar Pradesh East, is targeting more on the next Assembly elections in the state, slated to be held in 2022, more than ensuing Lok Sabha elections, where the stakes of the party in the state are nominal.
Though she has started her campaigning in the state seeking impressive performance of Congress candidates and asking party cadre to reach out people in a systematic way, she is advising them to keep in view of 2022 polls, at the same time.
She asked party workers in state to start preparations for Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections scheduled to take place in 2022. Encouraging party workers in her brother and Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s bastion, Priyanka said,” Are you preparing for elections? Not for this (Lok Sabha Elections), for 2022? Are you doing? You have to work.”
She kicked off second leg of her campaign yesterday with the visit to Amethi. She is scheduled to reach her mother and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s bastion Rae Bareli today. She will visit Ayodhya tomorrow.
Earlier, it was speculated that she may be pitted against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi. But, the Congress dismissed such reports. She said that no decision has been made yet on her contesting in the present elections. She also said that her own wish is to work for the party’s organization.
However, she asserted that if the party asks her to contest, she will definitely do so. “ But my personal wish is to work for the party’s organisation as a lot of work needs to be done,” she said. She added,”I have told party workers that it is very important you campaign properly this election. You should go to each and every house, and tell people that this election is to save the nation. Not Rahul Gandhi, but the nation should win this election.”
