The Congress general secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi has sent ripples across the political spectrum by indicating her intention to contest from Varanasi, against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A day after stating that she is ready to contest from anywhere, if the party desires, responding to party workers suggestion to contest from her mother Sonia Gandhi’s constituency Rae Bareli, every one were stunned with her question “Why not from Varanasi?”.
Her question has indicated her desire to contest from the high-profile constituency, which would give national prominence to her. In 2014 elections, AAP chief Aravind Kejriwal contested against Modi from here. Already BJP announced that he will contest again from here.
Till now, no opposition party declared their candidates from Varanasi. As her mother Sonia and brother Rahul Gandhi are said to be facing stiff contest from BJP in their respective constituencies, Priyanka had visited these two constituencies and interacted with party booth-level workers, block presidents, gram panchayat and nagar panchayat heads.
However, she asserted that her prime task assigned by the party was to strengthen the party structure in the eastern Uttar Pradesh, which is known to be as a strong hold of BJP. Both Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath are representing from this area only.
