Congress president Rahul Gandhi will file his nomination papers from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh on April 10. On the next day, her mother Sonia Gandhi will file her nomination papers from Raebareli on April 11.
Already, Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination papers in second constituency Wayanand of Kerala, yesterday. AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who was present with her brother while filing nomination papers, is expected to follow him in Amethi and mother in Raebareli also.
Though Amethi is a strong hold to Gandhi family, for the first time seems to be witnessing a stiff contest from Union Minister and BJP candidate Smriti Irani. Rahul defeated her by over a lakh votes majority in 2014 polls.
The seat has long been a stronghold of the Congress, which has not been defeated here in three decades — barring in 1998, when the BJP’s Sanjay Singh defeated Satish Sharma of the Congress by a margin of 23,270 votes. Amethi was regained by the Congress in 1999 when Sonia Gandhi was elected MP from there.
