Kerala journalist dies after ‘drunk’ IAS officer’s car rams into bike

A Kerala journalist was killed in the early hours of Saturday after being hit by a car which was allegedly being driven by IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman. The car, which was overspeeding, rammed into KM Basheer’s bike near Museum Junction in the capital.

Basheer, the Thiruvananthapuram unit head of Malayalam daily Siraj was taken to the Government Medical College hospital immediately after the accident but he succumbed to injuries.

While Sriram suffered minor injuries, his friend Wafa Firoze who was also present in the car escaped unhurt. There are reports that the IAS officer, who was recently posted as Survey Director, was under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed condolences at the news of Basheer’s death. “Basheer was notable among the journalists in the capital because of his active work and pleasant behaviour. I share the grief of the family members,” the Chief Minister wrote on Facebook.
