Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid last respects to Sushma Swaraj, one of the the tallest leaders of BJP and former external affairs minister, who passed away last night following a cardiac arrest.
While paying tribute to the BJP stalwart, PM Modi got emotional as he stood by the mortal remains and met Swaraj’s daughter Bansuri and husband Swaraj Kaushal.
PM Modi last night condoled Swaraj’s demise, saying a glorious chapter in Indian politics had come to an end.
“A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people,” he tweeted.
“Sushma Ji’s demise is a personal loss. She will be remembered fondly for everything that she’s done for India. My thoughts are with her family, supporters and admirers in this very unfortunate hour. Om Shanti,” read another tweet.
Recalling her as a prolific orator and outstanding Parliamentarian, PM Modi said that she was uncompromising when it came to matters of ideology and interests of the BJP, whose growth she immensely contributed to.
She was appointed the External Affairs Minister in the first term of Modi government in 2014. The portfolio is now held by former foreign secretary S. Jaishankar.
