Wrestler and Commonwealth Games champion Babita Phogat and her father Mahavir Phogat have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), today, in the presence of Union minister Kiren Rijiju.
The two popular faces of Haryana joined the BJP at an event at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. Ahead of the Haryana assembly elections, the Phogats joining BJP will give the party a further thrust in the state.
Mahavir Phogat, who was chief of the Jannayak Janata Party’s sports cell, will switch sides from the JJP, which was floated last year by former Hisar MP Dushyant Chautala following a vertical split in the Indian National Lok Dal. The development comes barely two months before the Haryana Assembly polls.
Earlier, Babita Phogat came out in support of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar after he courted a controversy with his remarks on Kashmiri girls. The wrestler had backed him saying there was “nothing offensive” in what he said.
“Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has not made any such statement that is offensive to our sisters and daughters. I urge media to not misinterpret his statement,” the Arjuna awardee had said while replying to a journalist on Twitter.
